CONTENTIOUS CLAUSES ALTERED
(THE SUS'S Parliamentary Kcporu.) WELLINGTON, Tliursday. Two contentious c lauses in the Shops and Offices Amendment Bill, which were the subject of an all-night sitting in the House of Representatives, have been amended by the Legislative Council. A new proviso has been added to the clause governing the hours of boys under 18 and females employed in shops which are limited to 8.30 p.m. This proposes to permit the employment of such assistants until 10.30 p.m. in the sale of meals or refreshments in shops carrying on the business of a restaurant combined with'that of a baker or confectioner. The proviso that an hour over ordinary time must be worked before a meal allowance of Is 6d is paid has been struck out and a new provision is made for the payment of such allowance for meals as may be provided for such cases by any award or industrial agreement. Where no such provision is made, an allowance of Is 6d for a meal is to be paid on every day on which shop assistants are employed during extended hours.
