DEVONPORT BOROUGH
PROBLEMS AHEAD The attendance at Devonport Borough Council last evening was Messrs. Aldridge, Mayor, Hislop, Browne, Massey, Enright, H. A. Campbell, Lyon, W. S. Campbell and Ellisdon. Mr. J. Bailey was appointed shift engineer at the pumping station. The engineer reported that if subsidy money was available on the £3OO grant to Stanley Park by the Auckland Relief Committee, then it would be possible to extend the top-soiling of an additional 1£ acres of park. The work would necessitate the cutting down of First and Second Avenue to provide spoil, and about £l6O would have to be charged to general account. The extension of the promenade between Dud6r’s Wharf and the Rowing Club shed is estimated to cost £1,078. Money for this is provided by the Watson Bequ<«sL A further sum of £ 550 is required to stone face the existing wall to the west of the proposed works near the rowing shed. Sixteen dwellings, one church and one shop are. being erected in the borough. The fire alarm system may be extended to include a box at the new wharf. The macadamising of the footpaths in Calliope Road is to be proceeded with. Mr. P. J. Sheehan, of the Devonport Borough Council, has tendered his resignation. The councillors at last night’s meeting expressed regret at his action. When a complaint came before the council last night concerning the almost impossible condition of Cameron Street, one councillor remarked that in his 16 years’ residence in the neighbourhood he could not remember the “d —” street being metalled. Some relief was promised the complainants.
