A BRIDGE PARTY AT THE LYCEUM
Mrs. W. Morragh was tlie hostess at a delightful bridge party in the pret-tily-decorated Lyceum Club rooms. Bowls of bright flowers were used with striking effect in the lounge, while the tea-tables were decked with silver vases of Iceland poppies. Mrs. Morragh wore an ensemble of fawn mariette with a hat to tone when receiving her guests, who included Mrs. W. Hogg, Mrs. M. Ross, Mrs. F. Moorhouse, Mrs. S. IDransfield, Mrs. C. IDevore, Mrs. W. Gunn, Mrs. L. Massey, Mrs. Revell, Mrs. Hislop, Mrs. Hammer, Mrs. A. Bullock. Mrs. Salek, Mrs. Culpan, Mrs.' W. Maben, Mrs. Murray, Mrs. Marriner, Mrs. Van Staveren, Mrs. R. Sheath, Mrs. F. Hunt, Mrs. I). Cooper, Mrs. Casement Aickiin Mrs. Ganaway, Mrs, G. Dransfield, Miss R. Ganaway, Miss Sixford, Miss J. Marriner and Miss Gendall.
winners in the best-dressed couple competition, and Aliss E. Cambie (“Eastern Lady”) won the prize for the best-dressed lady. Mr. S. Corban was successful in the gentlemen’s competition, as a “Futurist Coster Cove.” Mr. and Airs. Ashley won the spot waltz for married couples. Miss A. O’Brien and Mr. Oats secured the “excuse me, lady,” spot waltz, and the Alonte Carlo went to Aliss Muirson and Mr. T. Bell. Alusic was supplied by “The Merry Five Orchestra,” and extras were given by Aliss U. Bolland and Air. T. Bell. * * * One of the big social events of the Kaitieke county is the Collie Club ball, and this year it was even more successful than usual. Visitors were in attendance from all over the district, and the function reflected the greatest credit on the club’s executive committee, which was mainly responsible for the arrangements. During the evening the president, Air. J. F. Waldegrave, expressed the club’s thanks to all who had assisted in the success achieved, his remarks being supplemented by Air. Beechey, the secretary, who assured the guests of their welcome, and referred to the great popularity of the Collie Club ball. At the weekly euchre tournament held at Raurimu, the ladies’ prize was won by Airs. Smith, that for the gentlemen going to Air. A. Hutson. The ladies’ prize was donated by Air. Sarich. Consolation 'prizes went to Airs. Dobson and Air. A. Rees. A farewell evening to Air. J. Ivcllns was held at Air. R. Grossart’s residence, Taringamotu, when a considerable number of friends gathered for a social evening. A happy time was spent by everyone, and the guest was presented with a wallet. Airs. Alerrikin, the president, expressed pleasure at being called on to perform the official opening of the Raurimu tennis courts for the current season. Air. Wilson, the club captain, spoke briefly and extended a hearty welcome to all new members and visitors. Airs. Alerrikin, who has been associated with tennis in the district for many years, was presented with a lovely bouquet, the work of Airs. Wilson. The presentation was charmingly carried out by little Aliss Jean Wilson, and was feelingly acknowledged by Airs. Alerrikin. Mrs. Wilson and Airs. Naylor played the first game after the opening. Tho children of the Ohakukura Public School enjoyed themselves last week on the occasion of Animals’ Welfare Day. The winners of the prizes were: Margaret Bowman, in the girls’ section, with her well-mannered horse; and in the boys’ department Frank Alartin’s gosling caught the judge’s eye, and won first prize. Airs. W. Gi.rvin. in the unavoidable absence of the president’s wife. Airs. T. G. Lawler, “threw up the jack,” and the 14th anniversary of the Taumarunui Bowling Club’s activities was declared open by Air. Lawler. The Croquet Club was also opened in beautiful weather, Air. Lawler malleting tho first ball. As a wind-up to the opening the Bowling and Croquet Club held a social evening in the Foresters’ Hall, proceedings taking the form of a card tournament.
