DEATH OF PLAYWRIGHT
MR. JOHN LUTHER LONG WROTE “MADAME BUTTERFLY” By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright. NEW YORK. Tuesday. The death has occurred of the American playwright, Mr. John Luther Long. Deceased was the author of “Madame Butterfly.”—Sun. The late Mr. J. L. Lon” was born i:i Pennsylvania in 1861. He read for the law, was admitted to the Bar and practised in Philadelphia. He wrote “Madame Butterfly" in 18D8 in story form and in 1900 he collaborated with Mr. David Belasco in its dramatisation. Later the theme was used for opera. He produced many other stories and then went in for play-writing. His plays include "The Darling of the Gods" (with Mr. David Belasco). "Adrea,” "The Dragon Fly" (with Mr. E. C. Carpenter), "Dolce." "Baby Grand," “Lady Betty Martingdale” and "Billy Boy.” Mr. Long also wrote the librettos of a number of operas.
