GREAT TRIVALVE
THRILLING RACE FOR CUP INTENSE EXCITEMENT BURST OF SPEED AND GAMENESS Cij Cable. —Press Association —Copyright Reed. 10.45 a.in. SYDNEY, To-day. “DNCOURAGED by rapturous shouts from many thousands of people, the brilliant and game colt Trivalve and his rider Lewis gained additional fame by winning the Melbourne Cup,” says the correspondent of the “Sydney Morn ing Herald.” “It was one of the most memorable finishes in the history of the race. “The excitement it caused was intense. Never before had such exciting scenes been witnessed at Flemington. “As the horse returned to weigh in, Lewis was given an ovation, which was well merited, for he had ,shown finished horsemanship throughout the race. “Lewis has now piloted more winners of the Cup than any other rider, having won in 1902, 1915, 1919 and 1927.” The “Herald” adds: “From the start, in which Valaisian was left by many lengths, there was a rush for the inner rail. When the course proper was reached, Lewis was making every effort to bring over Trivalve, who was fairly wide out. Approaching the halfmile, Murillo appeared to meet interference. The field had closed up. Affirm had a slight lead on Silvius into the straight. Bicolour also came into prominence, followed by Trivalve, who had secured a nice run up. Lewis got every ounce out of the Derby winner, and gained inch by inch on Silvius until only a length separated them a furlong from home. “Both horses then strained every nerve and muscle. The riders, too, were making desparte efforts. Trivalve caught Silvius 100yds away, but it was not till 50yds from the post that Trivalve’s great staying blood asserted itself in a burst of spt?ed and gameness. “The colt had its reward, for he had the measure of Silvius, and with powerful strides passed the post a length to the good.” The “Daily Telegraph” says: “It was a display of sterling stamina that won the day for Trivalve. Practically from start to finish Lewis was riding hard to keep him in his position, and the fact that he finished strongly in the circumstances stamps him as one of the greatest staying three-year-olds Australia has known.”—A. and N.Z.
