MAKER OF NO. PLATES
NO FURTHER COMPENSATION PETITION TO PARLIAMENT (THE SUN’S Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. No recommendation has been made by the Public Petitions Committee, which reported to the House of Representatives to-day on the petition of Frederick James Lake, of Auckland, who sought compensation for the loss of his business of manufacturing re-gistration-plates for motor-vehicles, through the passing of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1924. Mr. V. H. Potter, Roskill, expressed regret that the committee had not been able to make a favourable recommendation, but he realised that it was in an awkward predicament owing to the fact that petitioner had already received £2OO from the Government in full settlement. He had hoped to be able to start in some other business, but the whole of the £2OO had been absorbed in legal expenses, so petitioner again approached the Government for help. Mr. A. Harris, Waitemata, said that he sympathised with petitioner, who had had reason to expect that he would be able to supply registration plates for a number of years at least. The Government had recognised the hardship in making him the grant of £2OO in settlement.
