NATIONAL TAX FAVOURED

PRICES INCREASED Press Association. • To-day. The municipal authorities applaud the petrol tax, as long as it is required and consider it the most equitable of all systems for raising money for road construction. Mr. F. Manton. president of the Wellington Automobile Club, said that motorists were in favour of a national system of taxation, as against local taxation, but did not expect the amount would be so high. Notwithstanding the hint given by the Prime Minister, sellers of petrol clapped on the extra fourpence to-day at 1 pun. on the ground that if the

amount had been taken oft they would have had demands to reduce the price, and the argument cut both ways. Local bus owners reckon the new tax means £1 a day to them, but state that they would not mind so much if they had a guarantee that the money would be spent on the roads. They are not convinced that the money raised from motorists in the past has all been spent on the roads. TAX OF 2D SUGGESTED MOTOR UNION RESOLUTION Press Association . CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. The South Island Motor Union passed the following resolution yesterday evening: “That the decision to impose a tax having been come to by Parliament, we now urge that there be an amendment to the resolution to tax petrol at 4d a gallon, and that a tax of 2d be substituted with no exemptions.” “That in view of the extra taxation, the union demand an extra seat on the Main Highways Board for a represer tative nominated by the South Island Motor Union.”
