TRIVALVE!

A Great Three-Year-Old Scores in Melbourne Cup

WINNINGS NOW TOTAL £24,315

BY his splendid victory in yesterday’s Melbourne Cup, the three-year-old colt Trivalve, winner of the A.J.C. Derby and V.R.C. Derby, has brought his winnings up to £24,315, so that he has an excellent chance of catching the figures of Gloaming’s winnings, £43,100, and Heroic’s £38,602 10s. Details of the big race and other events appear below.

Melbourne Cup Day came in with a dull sky. Rain fell overnight and also during the early stages of the morning. Though the sky remained overcast the weather was fine when racing commenced. There was an enormous attendance, including the GovernorGeneral, Lord Stonehaven. There was an exciting race for the Melbourne Cup. Silvius looked like a winner at the distance. Trivalve, who was sixth at the mile post, finished best and scored brilliantly. Son o’ Mine finished with a phenomenal run, after being last at the home turn. Merry Mint showed up for a long way, but Pilliewinkie was never dangerous. The winner and the rider (R. Lewis) were accorded a remarkable ovation, which lasted for several minutes. Lewis had his fourth victory in the race. It was the fourth win for the trainer, J. Scobie. Trivalve is the first horse to win a Derby and Cup since Patrobas won both in 1915. THE MUSKET STRAIN After the race, Lewis said he had a good ride. His horse was never further back than tenth, and followed Reed on Silvius. Fie considered Trivalve won because he had two strains of Musket against Silvius’s one. Trivalye was bred by his owner, Mr. E. E. D. Clarke, who is at present on a Wishing excursion in New Zealand. Lewis is 49 years old, and Scobie is 67. They were both congratulated by the Governor-General after the race. After being fourth in the early stages of the Hurdle Race, Deauville led at the last hurdle and won nicely. Deauville has now won the last three races. The time was a race record. BRILLIANT SPRINTER Fujisan scored a brilliant victory in the High-Weight. He won the same race last year. His rider, J. Pike, has steered the winner in three successive years. Maid of the Nook finished brilliantly and scored a narrow win in the Nursery' Handicap. She cost 80gns as a yearling and has the record of two wins anda second in four starts. Up to the present she has won £1,500 in stakes. Clan Robert, after being fifth in the early stages, led into the straight in the Steeplechase and scored a popular victory'. Fie was ridden by r the veteran, E. Moon, and was trained by' J. Scobie. Navargo fell and was fatally injured. Beau Hania was a long way back in the opening stages of the Yan Yean Stakes, but finished with, a great burst and won brilliantly, ridden by' Frank Dempsey'.
