A price which is believed to be the highest ever paid in the Gisborne district for a polo pony was paid yesterday by Sir Bruce Stewart, of Pigeon Bay, Canterbury. He secured Mr. James Jobson’s pony. Nearly a Fire. —Overheated bearings in an electric motor which operates the bellows of St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Cambridge, interrupted the service on Sunday morning. Smoke was seen to be issuing from the vestry and a prompt investigation probably saved the church from an actual fire. Hamilton Listeners Combine.— A meeting of wireless enthusiasts last, evening formed the Hamilton Listeners’ Association. The first steps of the organisation will be an effort to obviate the howling valve trouble where it exists. Mr. R. F. Haycock was elected president. Old Man’s Escape. —Awakening t > find his whare in flames, Mr. Kenneth McDonald, aged 75 years, who lives on the Three Mile Bush Road. Whangarei, wrapped himself in his blankets and dashed through the doorway. He was admitted to the Whangarei Hospital suff€-ring from burns on the face and hands. Small City Fire.—Slight damage was done to the floorboards of a building in Albert Street owned by Dearsleys. Ltd., a little before 6 o’clock last evening. The outbreak, which is thought, to have been caused through an electric cable fusing, was easily extinguished by the City Brigade. The building is insured with the Royal and Alliance Companies for £, 7,000. Ponsonby House Damaged. —A house in West End Road. Ponsonby, owned and occupied by Mr. C. O’Hagen, was damaged by fire about 3 a.m. to-day. One room and a ceiling were on fire when the City Brigade arrived on the scene, but the flames were soon extinguished. The house was being renovated at the time and contained no furniture. The building was insured for £I,OOO in the Northern office.
