SUNDAY SCHOOL WORK GOES ON STEADILY

31,000 SCHOLARS ON ROLL YEAR UNDER REVIEW The report to be presented to the 62nd annual meeting gi the Auckland Sunday School Union, which will be held this evening, discloses a record of steady progress'. The addition of 15 schools, 73 teachers and 545 scholars has greatly increased the strength of the union. At September 30 the roll showed 385 schools, 3,156 teachers and 31,307 scholars. Long-service diplomas were awarded to Mr. IT. IT. Tindall, of Matakana Sunday School, for 43 years’ service, and Mr. G. T. Civil, of Warkworth Methodist Sunday School, 26 years’ service. Following are the results of the Scripture examinations, in which 1,967 candidates from 137 schools sat: Grade 1, W. IV. Ingram, Swanson Interdenominational; Grade 2, Merle Brown, Waihi Baptist; Grade 3, Eileen Ryan, Remuera Methodist; Grade 4, Thomas Poole, Birkenhead Methodist; Grade 5, Louie Roberts, Birkenhead Methodist; 6, Stanley Edgar, Thames Baptist. Prizes were awarded to 491 candidates obtaining over 75 marks. First-class certificates were awarded to 779 candidates obtaining between 50 and 74 marks, and 322 candidates gained second-class certificates. The successful schools in the competition for banners of honour were:—A division, Mount Albert Baptist; B division, Great North Road Methodist; C division, Tararu Presbyterian; D division, Oratia Interdenominational. The work of the back-blocks missioner, Mr, E. H. Pain, is the subject of special mention in the report. During the past 12 months his work has been chiefly in North Auckland. The furthermost settlements in the North Island were reached in spite of a difficult winter and much good work has done. The work was again subsidised by a small grant by the British and Foreign Bible Society.
