RETRENCHMENT

As a result of the policy of retrenchment in the South Australian Railways,- it has been decided that the services of 2,000 employees he dispensed with in the next six weeks. The Premier, Mr. Butler, says the first to go will be those who have reached the retiring age, but are still kept on. Owing to the nature of the work it is impossible to provide parttime employment to do away with the dismissals. Mr. Butler said: “It is not intended to apply retrenchment throughout the Government service, but economy is being practised in that no new appointments will be made. Vacancies caused by retirement owing to men reaching the age-limit will not be Ailed.”—A. and N.Z.
