CHEAP EFFECTIVE REPAIR The weak points in modern coolingsystems are the flexible rubber connections from the cylinder head to the radio tor, for, after long use, toese connections are liable to crack. fahouui one prove defective, and a spare not be available, a quick temporary repair can be made in the following way. Drain the radiator, and open out the edges of the crack in the rubber tubing. Scrape or rub with glass paper until the rubber is clean, not only the edges themselves, but for some distance around the crack, giving space enough for a rubber patch to be put over the crack. Blow any dust from the sandpaper that may be in and around the crack, then wash well with a little benzine, and allow to ury. It you have in your repair kit what is known as “tyre dough”—-to my mind an indispensable requisite for tyre repair and upkeep—proceed as follows: Apply a little rubber solution to the edges of the crack, and when “tacky,’’ fill up the crack with ‘ tyre dough.’
Next get a piece of ruboer paten cut to the correct size, and apply the rubber solution over the whole of the area where the patch is to be placed. Allow to get practically dry, then remove the protective skin from the piece of patching rubber, and press the latter firmly in position over the crack in the tube. If the work has been done carefully. a thoroughly sound job should result. If you want to make doubly sure, you can bind round the patch i with a few layers of insulating tape. | but, really, this should not be neces|sary. If you do not possess any “tyre ; dough,” you proceed to make the repair in a similar manner, except that i vou coat the edges of the crack and ! the outside of the tube with rubber I solution in one operation, and as soon j as the solution has dried off apply the [ patch, as before*
