RELIEF DRIVE
TO HELP UNEMPLOYED | COUNCIL OF WOMEN TO ASSIST Assistance in the drive organised by the Mayor’s Unemployed Relief Fund Committee, is to be given by the National Council of Women. Miss Carnachan, who presided over the meeting of the council last night, asked for helpers in the collection on the morning of Saturday. November 12. It had been decided that the men should undertake the collecting in the city area and the suburban area would be managed by the women. The National Council of Women had undertaken to collect in a portion of Remuera under her direction. Miss Melville said the drive, which has been arranged for November 9. 10. 11 and 12, would be subsidised pound for pound by the Government. OPEN-AIR SCHOOLS A remit was received from the honorary members of the council to the effect that they considered the time was opportune for the launching of an educative campaign with regard to the matter of open-air schools. Mrs. Jellie said that in the South Island there were 15 open-air classrooms, and in Auckland there was only one, and that was in a private school. It was generally recognised that these schools had proved beneficial to both teachers and pupils. A sub-committee to consider the matter was set up, consisting of Mrs. Jellie, Mrs. Russell, Mrs. Benfell, Miss Newton, Miss Carnachan and Miss Flatt. An address was given by Miss Steel ! Moss, assistant director of child wel- ! fare for the southern half of Pennsylvania.
