AVOID DOMESTIC RENEWALS
SOME PRACTICAL SUGGESTIONS “I am forever buying new silk shades for the light,” sighed Jane, regarding ruefully a new set which, -to judge from their diaphanous appearance, did not promise a very long lease of life. “Why buy silk?” retorted Ann, the practical. “I bought some shades of crystal lustres six years ago; they are still going strong and are likely to last as long as I want them!” And there are all sorts of ways of cutting down expenses on similar lines. How much money do you spend a year on flowers for your vases? Of course, it is lovely to have the real flowers, but some of us find it difficult to afford the luxury out of a small budget. The flowers made of mother o’ pearl, oyster shells and common sea shells are so beautiful that they reconcile us to the absence of the real thing. Spend a little money on the purchase of one or two different kinds, and the expense will be the last under this heading for quite a long time to come. How much do you spend in the course of a long lease in renewing the gravel in the garden path? It amounts to quite a lot of money, whereas it would cost no more to lay down some crazy paving. Spread over a number of years, its price would actually represent an economy. How much do you spend on new washers for your old-fashioned taps? It would pay you to scrap the obsolete things and buy the new washerless ones. How much do you spend on renewing brushes and brooms? As much as it would cost you to instal an up-to-date vacuum cleaner, I opine. Look around and see if there are not many other items that come into the same category.
