SHARP DECLINE OF CUSTOMS REVENUE
OCTOBER SLUMP RETURNS FOR THE YEAR The quietness of city business during October is showil in the decline in customs revenue collected at the port of Auckland. The total was £147,596, which is £77,301 less than the amount collected in October, 1926. The whole year to date has been one of commercial quietude. So far, the total customs revenue has been £1,977.854. which is £96,641 less than that for the corresponding period last year. Part of the decline in the October revenue is due to the month’s quiet shipping, only cne steamer having arrived from England. The Collector of Customs, Mr. A. V. Penn, said that another reason for the decline was that spirit merchants were using up their duty paid stocks, cleared out in anticipation of increased tariff.
