NEW PRAYER BOOK
LEGAL QUESTION RAISED APPLICATION FOR WRIT By Cable. —Press Association. — Copyright. LONDON, Saturday. The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. R. T. Davidson, was requested to receive a deputation of church people who were anxious for an assurance that the bishops would insist on a strict observance of the new Prayer Book. In reply, he willingly assented, but in the meantime he has announced that all the English bishops, except the Bishop of Norwich, Dr. B. Pollock, have already intimated that they will require obedience to the new rules of worship. A barrister was to-day given permission by the King’s Bench Division to apply for a writ prohibiting the National Assembly of the Church of England from proceeding further with the new Prayer Book. The barrister contended that the law required the three Houses —clergy, laity and the bishops—to debate the book, whereas only the bishops debated it. The case will be argued on November 7.—A. and N.Z.-Sun.
