Mild Surprises at Masterton

KEEN RACING EASY WIN FOR BEAUMONT (Special to THE SUN.) MASTERTON. Saturday. The -Masterton Racing Club’s spring meeting was held to-day in line weather. The track was in excellent order and the attendance fair. The totalisator handled £12,901. Win For Red Fuchsia Ardfinnan, Calithe and Masher were withdrawn from the High-weight Handicap, leaving half-a-dozen to go to the post. Of these, Brigadier Bill and Red Fuchsia were the favourites. Red Fuchsia went to the front six furlongs from home and was never headed, winning by nearly half-a-dozen lengths. There was a good contest for second place, Brigadier Bill beating Gordon Swift by a nose, with Sir Moment a close fourth. Hymgreat was last. Australis Smart Two-year-old Australis, Flying Binge and Card Trick were favourites in the Maiden Stakes. Australis caught the jump out, and soon went to tho front, there to be joined by Flying Binge and Card Trick. Card Trick led into the straight from Australis and Stanchion, but Australis came through and won by two lengths from Card Trick, who beat Stanchion by a length, with Thurville fourth, and Spearmiss next. The Favourite Left Polyphemus was backed down to a short price in the Flying Handicap, with Inner Harbour the best backed of the others. Polyphemus got away b -dly, and Mireusonta went to the front from Sarchee. Polyphemus was lying fourth at the entrance to the straight, but could not come on, and Sarchee won very nicely by a length and a-half from Lausanne, who finished well in second place, two lengths clear of Mireusonta, with Lady Ideal and Polyphemus close up. Lady Killer Scores The Lawn Handicap saw Ring Boy •♦■nt out a good favourite with Prince Paladin also well supported. Vigilance went to the front at the stand and led' to the straight from Kindle, Lady Killer and Ring Boy In the run home, Vigilance weakened and Lady Killer won by a length and ahalf from her, with Ring Boy and Kindle following. Rowley Takes The Cup The scratching of Vesperus and Willow Wai left only five to contest the Cup. Rowley was favourite, in a fairly even betting race. Tresham- led Waicullus to the straight, where Waioullus took charge, hut Rowley got up to win by a length, with Ardfinnan third, and Tresham last. Panther From Nowhere Imitation was only a slightly better favourite than Maui for the Lans(lown Handicap. Imitation got away best, and led for half a furlong, but then Mandarine was rushed up, and he and Ruakura led to the straight from Imitation and Rotowhero, with Maui next. A great finish was in progress when Panther came from the clouds, and, sweeping up on the outer, won by half a length. Imitation was only a head in front of Mandarine, with Rotowhero a good fourth. Beaumont Easily Vesperus was always favourite for the Grandstand Handicap, but Beaumont and Kilmoyler also carried big support. Brigadier Bill made the early running and led to the straight from Beaumont with Vesperus well back, but in the straight Beaumont went away to win easily by two lengths from Brigadier Bill, who was three lengths ahead of Vesperus, with Kilmoyler fourth. Handicap, went for Arch Arrow, Imitation, Miss Pat and Oscillation. Arch Arrow led to the straight from Quantum and Imitation, and in the straight Quantum came through to win easily by two lengths from Arch Arrow, with Imitation second and Miss Pat and Card trick next.
