MOTORISTS FOR TRIAL
CYCLIST’S DEATH AT WANGANUI “A SLENDER CHARGE” (Special to THE Slid?.) WANGANUI, Sunday. On a charge of negligently driving a motor vehicle on September 5, and thereby causing the death of William Thompson, Alfred John Banks was committed to the Supreme Court for trial yesterday. Alfred Thomas, baker, who was cycling with Thompson on the evening of the accident, said he did not see the accident, but heard the crash. He did not hear the approaching motorcar. Thompson, after being picked up, said he was all right, but felt a little sick. After the accident the car pulled up within three or four yards. The car was travelling steadily. Edward Richardson, chemist’s assistant. said the bicycle was lying more than half way between the kerb and the tramline. After the accident there was one light burning on accused’s car but he could not say which one. Mrs. A. Porlong said she passed two cyclists when driving up the Avenue near St. John’s Post Office. The cyclists were on the correct side of the road. Immediately after passing something attracted her attention, then accused's car passed her on the left side. She pulled up as soon as she knew there had been an accident. Counsel said the charge of negligence was a very slender one. Senior-Sergeant Lopdell read a statement made by Banks at the inquest.
