JOSEPH HISLOP
SEASON AT TOWN HALL Joseph Hislop, the world-renowned tenor, arrives to-morrow per the Ulimaroa and will open his Dominion tour in the Town Hall on Thursday next. Concerts will also be given on Saturday and Monday. Mr. Hislop comes to New Zealand with a reputation gained in the world’s largest opera house. He has sung in every country of note in the world, and almost for the first time in musical history a British-born tenor has won international fame. Mr. Hislop’s tour of Australia was marked by intense enthusiasm and crowded houses. The New Zealand tour is limited, as Mr. Hislop has been engaged to return to Melbourne to sing in the “Messiah” with the Melbourne Philharmonic Society on December 20 and 24. For Joseph Hislop’s opening concert on Thursday a grand gala performance has been arranged. His star item will be “Ah Fuyez,” from Massenet’s “Manon,” with piano and organ accompaniment. Mr. Maughan Barnett will officiate at the organ. Another notable item will be Beethoven’s “Adelaide,” and other selections will be chosen from his extensive repertoire. Alberto Sciarretti, who has a fine European reputation as a solo pianist, in addition to playing all the accompaniments, will play several solos, among which the “Prelude and Fugue” (Szamboli) and compositions by Handel, Martusci and Chopin will be interesting. The coming of this great tenor is arousing much interest among Auckland music-lovers and a successful season seems assured. The box plans at Lewis R. Eady and Son, Ltd., show a healthy appearance.
