OLD BUS FOR NEW
BUY SOME CATHEDRAL? Among- all the great English cathedrals which are making efforts to defeat decay, Lincoln must be unique in offering pieces of itself for sale to aid its restoration fund. In one corner of the building is a box of souvenirs which are for sale. These souvenirs consist of fragments of wood, dating back to 1092, which have been taken from the North-West Tower, and hand-made nails of the year Some of the massive oak timbers which connected the piers of the nave arcade are so decayed that they have had to be taken down in order to be replaced by stone. This beautiful old oak has been sawn up into pieces which are given to people who make an offering to the repair fund. To-day, for a shilling, I was able to set a. fragment of oak, S3*. years old. It is in a state of such wonderful preser\ ation that it looks almost new. Several pieces of oak have been made into large-sized crosses with a brass inscription, and these can be acquired for £l. A verger told me that there had been a great demand for the hand-made nails which had been found. Every one of these has been disposed of. but it is hoped that more will shortly be available for those who would like such souvenirs in return, for. their offering.g.
