“FINE INSTITUTION MUST BE KEPT CLEAN”

THREE YEARS FOR SCOUTMASTER “The institution you were in, the Boy Scouts, is one of the finest ever founded and it is a man’s duty inculcate morality and good citizenship,” said Mr. Justice Stringer in passing sentence this morning of three years’ imprisonment with hard labour on Thomas John Davies, who was found guilty of five charges of indecent assault on boys. For the prisoner, Mr. McKay pointed out that he was 59 years of age and had borne a good character. It was certainly a revolting crime to a normal person, but they might be accounted for by some mental defect. He could not ask for probation, but suggested a short term would suffice. His Honour said he looked on the crime as a serious one. The authorities required men of mature years to look after the boys. The prisoner, instead of teaching them the right thing had attempted to teach them things that might affect them for the rest of their lives. Had it not been for the recommendation of the jury to mercy his Honour said that he would have imposed a heavier sentence. It would be a lesson to any other man who undertook the same work.
