B SECTION MATCHES
UNIVERSITY V PONSONBY Rix-Trott, Lunn and Cleary all batted brightly for University against Ponsonby at Victoria Park on Saturday. All three batsmen were crisp in their strokes all round the wicket. Bartley, who made the top score, did not seem able to place the ball between the fieldsmen and many line drives did not alter the score book because of Ponsonby s good fielding. Later Bartley livened up and his 49 was a very patient effort. The best scores were Bartley 49, Cleary 28, Rix-Trott 24 and Lunn 23. The innings closed for a total of 177 runs. Peebles was the outstanding bowler for Ponsonby. He wound up with an average of six wickets for 3S, but at one stage he had the same number of wickets' for 15 runs. He varied fine fast bowling with a slow one, but occasionally the change was pitched short and was weak. Kemp took three wickets for 32 runs, and Warneford one for 43. Ponsonby early lost two wickets and when stumps were drawn had two down for 36, Worth 19 not out. Y.M.C.A. v. Shore A Y.M.C.A.’S score against Shore A at Victoria Park on Saturday would have been very poor indeed if it had not been for Wayne. He was rather slow in scoring at first, but when he had got set he hit the ball all round the wicket. His 54 was particularly pleasing. The only other double figures were scored by Carson (17) and Cato (13). Both are promising batsmen, particularly the former, and much better scores can be looked for from this pair during the season. The wickets were divided between Lusk, four for 24; Chisholm, two for 19; Foster, one for 28; Edwards, one for 14; and Beckston.
