SHORE IN FIRST
GOOD INNINGS AGAINST EDEN Shore timed its batting to a nicety on Devonport Domain, staying in until about ten minutes to six for a quietly compiled total of 220. Eden opened its innings, but at stumps had six runs on. Conditions for cricket were of the happiest. The pitch played • well though the paddock, which looked well from the grandstand, dragged slightly and stopped some good shots within inches of the boundary. Everything combined to favour the bats, bowlers appearing to get small help from a moderate cross-wind. Frater, who with Player opened the batting, made best knock of the day.
i His wicket was sixth to fall for 68 a thoroughly chanceless knock compiled by quiet judgment. When he did go be went to an excellent low catch in the slips by A. Weir off his brother. G. L. Weir. He displayed no I fireworks, though when nearing his half-century just ■ before afternoon tea he showed a
tendency to be lively. His big hit was when he connected with one of A. Weir’s and sent it for a big six. He took 80 minutes to get his first 50. Player was more venturesome and put on 29 before he was clean bowled by A. Weir. The opening batsmen put on 54 for the first wicket. Saunders’s innings was a bright patch. He hit hard and often until H. Gillespie caught him out on the boundary. Colebourne’s 27 ended with a smart return straight to the wickets by Gillespie. Eden had a quiet day in the field, which effectively pulled up the carpet shots. But they didn’t go to sleep. Both the run-out men, Webb and Colebourne lost their wickets to very smart returns. The Weir brothers were the hardest worked of the bowlers, and G. L. Weir ended up with the good bag of five wickets for 54. Postles bowled a long while without taking a wicket, but his value lay in the fact that he kept the batsmen quiet and yielded only 32 runs. McCarthy presided very efficiently at the wickets. He caught Monteith bright and early off his third ball. Scores:— SHORE First Innings FRATER, c A. Weir, b G. L. Weir .. 68 PLAYER, 1) A. Weir 29 BUSH, c Ellis, b G. L. Weir 3 6 GERRARD, c W. B.
