CREW TOOK THE LIFEBOATS
NONE ALLOTTED TO PASSENGERS CHARGES MADE BY MAFALDA SURVIVORS By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright. Received 9.5 a.m. RIO DE JANEIRO, Friday. THE French steamship Formosa has docked with survivors I from the foundered Italian liner Principessa Mafalda, who declare that the vessel’s machinery was had and the life-saving equipment inefficient. They allege also that, in the storm, the crew of the liner took the lifeboats and deserted the nassene'ers.
TPHEY add that the third-class passengers over-ran the ship and sacked the bar and the cabins. One of the survivors and his wife stated that they swam for half an hour amid half-eaten bodies and wreckage. They said there were no instructions in the cabins regarding the use of lifebelts, and that no boats were assigned to the passengers; also
that one boat-drill and one fire-drill were held, and were a complete fiasco, the passengers not being assembled, and no boats being swung out. They declared that after the disaster the boats were successfully launched, but never returned to the ship, being abandoned when the occupants had been rescued.—A. and N.z.
