Chapel Consecrated
HEADMISTRESS who wrought a great WORK FOR AUCKLAND ! , diocesan high school CEREMONY «'By virtue of our sacred office in the Church of God, we declare this .-nctuary to be forever consecrated and set a F art from all common u S cs, to the glory of the ever blessed Trinity.” Thus solemnly Archbishop Averill consecrated the new sanctuary of the collegiate chapel ut the Diocesan High School this morning. In the presence or a large congregation of old girls of the school, present scholars and their parents this beautiful addition to a beautiful house of worship was set aside—an inspiration to all who will have the privilege of worshipping within its walls. The completion of the chapel, which had only a temporary chancel, was made possible by the energy of old girls, who collected £I,OOO for the purpose. The work was undertaken and completed in “thankful remembrance of the service of Mary Etheldred Pulling,” first headmistress and mother of the school from its infancy. The consecration service was followed by the celebration of the Holy Eucharist. In his sermon the Archbishop paid an eloquent tribute to the faith and vision of Miss Pulling, who had made the school what it was to-day. Religious education did not mean merely the inculcation of certain religious principles into the child mind nor did it consist of the study of the scriptures. The purpose of the Church school was the creation of an atmosphere which would overshadow a scholar’s whole school life, so that in after years the pupil, alive to the highest ideals, might understand the meaning of life in service to others. Holding up to her girls the highest ideals of service to others, Miss Pulling had .wrought a great work for Auckland in the ennobling of thousands who were educated under her guidance.
