RACING AT ELLERSLIE

TO-MORROW AND MONDAY

THAMES CLUB'S PROGRAMME REVIEWED

THE annual race meeting of the Thames Jockey Club is this season to be held at Ellerslie and it eventuates tomorrow and on Monday. Excellent fields have been paid up for, and with the good tracks and fine weather continuing the fixture should be a splendid success. The review of the programme, together with the starting times of the various races, appears below. 19? THAMES HURDLES Of £200; two miles - Karamu . .10 12 As is getting customary with hurdle races at EllersGlenotus . . lo 8 lie tlie Held is the smallest of the day. Karamu, Glenliendal 10 4 otus, Kendal, Kamehameha and Rahepoto look like Kamehameha 10 " Providing a good contest, but Glenotus and Kendal may Rahepoto . 913 prefer the going a bit soft. Further down there is Slump ..'*96 Slump, who finished a fair second at Te Rapa on Te Tahi ... 9 4 Saturday, although the distance to-morrow will bother Mangani ... 9 0 the Absurd jumper. Te ’fahi is a possibility, while Mangani was beaten by a good one in Pouri at Cambridge on Monday. Two that should come in for good support are: KAMEHAMEHA and* MANGANI.

12.42 BOROUGH HANDICAP * First Division; of £100; seven furlongs w>Tot aU -f* * * 5 i? There are 19 left in this division, and include some Golden” rite ‘ * 811 with promising form in their favour. Among these Wedding ... 8 8 could be mentioned Rarakau who won well on SaturLady * * ’ day at To Rapa, and even with her weight she should Robinson ...85 he hard to beat. Whakarite ran two seconds at Te Abbey Day . . S 2 Rapa, and on that showing will soon make amends. Brampton . . 7 13 Golden Wedding does not seem to improve, although AshTrav° el n on one or two of her last season’s efforts she has pace, Orchus y ' ' i ii even if she is temperamental. Lady Robinson, too, has The Lover* ! 7 10 pace, and in her last outing she stood on the mark Nola Night . 7 10 and took no part in the race. With an even break Pompeus . . . 7 10 she may be dangerous in this company. Abbey Day Bombardier . 7 10 has done little since winning at Whangarei in the Bannock ... 7 10 autumn, and Brampton, who needs a dry track, may be Royal **‘ * 7 9 able to produce his smart two-year-old form. Ash Flying Tresses 7 9 Tray led into the straight in her last two starts, and Tidal .... 7 9 if she does not run too green again she may well finish San Quin ..79 in the money. Orchus- was made favourite in the Trial Handicap at Te Rapa the first day, and after lea-ding into the straight—he started from a bad position—he compounded. Perhaps the Quin Abbey gelding needed a race, in which case he should be all the better for it. Mussie was not produced last week, but she is said to be speedy once she leaves the mark. Flying Tresses is a smart filly, and Tidal has the pace if only he could be prevailed upon £0 reproduce it. Of the 19 likely runners the favourites may be: RARAKAU and WHAKARITE.

1245 BOROUGH HANDICAP * Second Division; of £100; seven furlongs WhakiT King . 8 9 There are some speedy sprinters engaged in this Winsome Boy 8 8 # section, and it will be a fine contest between these, Judge’s Box . 8 4 with one of them seeing it out to pull it off. SubFiery Lad . . 8 1 division goes very fast, and there is reason to expect Luxurious * * 711 that he will go a fast seven furlongs. Whaka King Good Boy .*„ * 7 ll also can travel, and it is surprising that with all his Creation .* .* ! 710 pace he is still eligible for maiden races. He has a King Swift . . 7 10 chance to-morrow, although a furlong shorter would Miss Myrtle . 7 10 be more to his liking. Winsome Boy has been disViburnum . . 7 10 appointing of late, and. so has Judge’s Box, although Hone Heke . . ?19 recently she has been moving well in her work. Fiery The Cryer **79 Lad cannot be overlooked, for he is now staying on Micrometer ’’79 better. La Roma finished third in the Te Rapa Trial, Cullgie . . . ! 7 9 and with the benefit of that race into her may be one Josie Melville 7 9 of the fancied division. Luxurious is a long time fulfilling his early promise, and Good Boy is improving all the time. Creation is fast, and the seven furlongs will suit him better than eight, but six wuuld be even better. Of those further down the scale The Cryer and Micrometer make most appeal, with Cullgie a possibility and Josie Melville also. The two favourites may be: WHAKA KING and SUBDIVISION

1 00 FLYING HANDICAP Of £300; six furlongs Sir Archie . . 8 11 This is a nice field, with sufficient good sprinters Ti'iiii 4 -* t 5 to make a close race of it. On top is Sir Archie, and Dave* 8 1 if he leaves the mark he will be a hard one to beat. Nancy Lee*. 7 9 Oration ran true at Te Rapa, and there was no flukq Archeen . . ’ 7 8 about his success there in pretty good company. FlyHigh Finance 7 6 ing Juliet was among the bunch finishing very fast Automne . . 7 2 behind Oration, and she will be all the better for that Nastors .... . i run. In fact she appeals as a distinct possibility. K?ng Emerald 7 0 Dave may want a race, and Nancy Lee is still good Modest Boy 7 0 enough, if also unlucky, to run into places. Archeen Antrim Boy .70 has not raced for a time, and High Finance, like most of the Paper Moneys, built for speed over short courses, piloted the field into the straight at the recent Auckland meeting. If she could be induced to run on backers would not need to look elsewhere for the winner. Automne is a disappointment, and Nastori has the pace. If the latter is started in preference to Oration notice ought to be duly taken. Gold Acre and King Emerald read best of the four on the minimum. Best backed should be:—• FLYING JULIET, SIR ARCHIE and NANCY LEE.

212 NURSERY HANDICAP ' Of £200; five furlongs Avoncourt . . 8 13 Despite the fact that the opposition at the Waikato Tustifv BlUe ’ 8 0 meeting was weak, there was no denying the fact that Ked Lion* .’ ! 7 12 Avoncourt has improved considerably, and her two The Begum ’. 7 10 wins there were scored convincingly, the second emMon Star ... 7 8 phaticaliy so. The filly moved well at headquarters Look Out ..77 yesterday morning. Nankin Blue hails from the same Coruscate ..77 stable, and will be bracketed with Avoncourt if both Section. • are started. Red Lion is a possibility, for he has come Volimond’ * * 7 5 on a good deal lately. The Begum showed pace at Te Valour I 7 5 Rapa, and with that experience should trouble the topweight. Mon Star is to have his first run. Look Out and Coruscate both hail from Jamieson’s stables, and they have the pace, with the former green at the barrier. Section has improved, and Volimond and Valour are two likely fillies. Perhaps the favourites may be: AVONCOURT and CORUSCATE

9r 7 _ GOLDFIELDS OUP C-Dl Of £600; 1J miles Pegaway ..90 The top-weight surprised by making a hid a furDeiightment 8 2 long from home in the open sprint at Te Rapa last Frirw,™ 7 12 day, and on this showing should go well. He is a real Koval Mint 7 H Brood one when right, and perhaps he will want anMo’saic ... 7 11 other race. Delightment is now well up in the weights Day Guard . 7 10 and still he has not won over a distance, but handled Papatu ... 7 9 well he has his chance. Mint Leaf is evidently back to Gala Day ..76 form, for there was merit in his Waikato Cup win, just Nippy . ..." 3 as much of the reverse when he failed the second Sr Kri'st 7 0 day. Master Doon is one of those always liable to Barometer !* 7 0 bob up, but Royal Mint reads well In this company at the weights. Mosaic is coming to hand with racing, and must he considered. Day Guard is wonderfully .well, and his hurdle is the distance. Papatu is in great nick, as his smart seven furlongs gallop yesterday showed, and he will be one of those to be headed off over the final dash. Gala Day is well enough if he can get the distance, but this may not bother him. Nippy ran a fine race in the Wellington Handicap, and on this showing, after getting away badly there, It is obvious that he is in fine iorm and therefore liable to prove the best of the bunch. The three below Nippy are not particularly fancied. The three that will command most support may be NIPPY, ROYAL MINT and PAPATU.

n io THAMES VALLEY HANDICAP Of £250; seven furlongs. Hipo 7 This is a nice-sized field, with three recent winners Le Cboucas ..93 a 5 i\\(. top of the handicap. Hipo is back to form, and King Smock . 812 so too j s Choucas. The latter party has. In the In the Shade 8 10 shade also engaged, and there will be much curiosity Archeno ... 8 4 evinced as to what is started, or, if both, how the money siaosi - - • 1 1 Is distributed, for both are likely to play a prominent Nucleus* *.’ . S 1 part if allowed to go to the post. Archeno has been Branson ... 8 0 racing consistently, and her failure last Saturday was Archibald ..79 caused through her inability to go the fast pace set. Serang .... 7 9 Siaosi is coming back, and Nulceus is in good fettle. Te Koroka . . 7 J Scat ig a posslbil ity if he would do his best, and so too Kuu.te 7 7 is Serang. Branson is now taking on open company, ■ ' * and good horse that he is he will not be able to give the field such a big start over the last two furlongs that he did at Te Rapa, ■pi-iced at all well at the turn he will not be outclassed. Archibald is also verv fit and will be one of the hardest to beat. Te Koroke and Ring Potoa read well. It Is an open race, in which favouritism may rest with IN THE SHADE, ARCHENO and LE CHOUCAS.

. PURIRI HANDICAP Of £150; one mile. Royal Doulton 8 11 At the top of the list is a useful back in Royal Levenside . . S 10 Doulton, who won so handsomely at the Avondale meetWhaka King . 8 S j ng and a f b er next start she was hopelessly left. LevenDaddy’s Girl 8 4 si( j e j s also a good sort, and in good form. Whaka King Restaurant . . - is preferred In the earlier engagement. Restaurant has Hnld’rvoiit* * 8 0 been running on in his outings, and if nicely placed at Respirator .‘ . 7 13 the home turn will show improvement. Wyoming has Komak .... 7 10 the pace to get a good position, and might be more inStar Comet . . 7 10 clined now to go on with it. Bold Front has been conPiet . ... 710 sistent in his three starts this season, these resulting in Good Boy . . 710 a f our th placing on each occasion. Respirator is now F SImv E 7 30 working well, and Komak, from the country, showed • promise when raced at the Marton meeting last month. m ar Comet is of the "iffy” variety, and these are best left alone. Piet ran .well. at. the, Auckland gathering,, and- an improvement on- that- running, wffl

make him prominent. Two that should command a big following, in the probable absence of Royal Doulton, are BOLD FRONT and LEVENSIDE. C 7 HAURAKI PLAINS HANDICAP * Of £250; one mile. Mint Deaf ..96 The topweight claims an engagement in the GoldPhaola ... 8 10 fields Cup, and if reserved for this last event his weight Thursby ... 8 6 may stop him. A further distance would suit him Ou in coma 11 8 5 better. Phaola raced fairly well at the last Ellerslie Sleepy Sol ’ ' 8 4 meeting, and she should be getting thoroughly seasoned Eh Timi .! [ s 3 now. Thursby has been racing prominently at. times. Aroh Queen S 0 and BaDymoy 11. is in splendid order if she can see out Harbour View S 0 the mile. Quincoma ran two good races at Te Rapa and will have a following. Sleepy Sol was galloping in fine style prior to the Auckland meeting, and this event should suit him. Eh Timi is having his first race for a long time, and Arch Queen and Harbour View are light-weight possibilities. The favoured ones may be l PHAOLA. QUINCOMA and SLEEPY SOL. -. w
