GUILTY OF ASSAULT

YOUNG GIRL ATTACKED SENTENCE DEFERRED A verdict of guilty of an attempt to commit a serious offence and of common assault was returned against Arthur Herbert Eden in the Supreme Court, before Mr. Justice Reed, late yesterday afternoon. Eden was charged with assaulting a girl 19 years of age. Two charges of common assault were also preferred. The girl was employed by accused in his tearooms, in Fanshawe Street. He had been insulting in his conduct. He had wanted to take her to cabarets, to give her fur coats and underclothing, and she refused. On one occasion he attacked her, but she was rescued by two men. Two other young girls spoke of the accused’s objectionable conduct toward them. Mr. R. A. Singer, for the accused, contended that the allegations of the girls had not been corroborated. The jury returned the verdict after an hour’s deliberation. Sentence was deferred until Monday.
