OFFENCES AGAINST GIRLS MUST STOP
REFORMATIVE SENTENCE FOR OFFENDER “Offences against little girls are extremely serious, and men must be prevented from interfering with them.” This statement was made by Mr. Justice Herdman in the Supreme Court yesterday, when he imposed a sentence of 12 months’ reformative detention on George William Atford, who had pleaded guilty to a charge of indecent assault on a girl. Mr. J. F. W. Dickson, for the accused, pleaded for probation, and pointed out that the girl had not been injured. He had had a good war record, and had been in his employment for many years. He had taken drink on the day of the assault, and that had caused the lapse. “At this session,” said his Honour, “no less than three men are charged with indecent assault, and It will have to be stopped. Men cannot expect probation for such offences. In this case there are certainly some extenuating circumstances, and a short term should meet the case.”
