Potatoes are short, and trader* for the next week are going to bt hard put to meet order*. Otherwise the grain seed and produce market is quiet. Merchants lately have, to a great extent, fallen into the habit of depending largely on Southern operators filling th* produce boats with potatoes sent up oa consignment. This week their expectations failed to materialise. The two boats which arrived early in the week brought only light shipments, totally inadequat* to meet the demand. An acute shortift is expected before the next produce steamer, which is not due till well on toward the end of next week, and price oa the spot is sure to advance. Business is being done for delivery ex the ship’s side next week at £6 IBs a ton to storekeepers. The quality of the Southern tubers * now not of a very high standard. Disappointing results are following the digging of the Pukekohe crop, both th* yield and the quality being poor. Nominally the price is about £-t> a ton oa trucks Pukekohe. The tone of the market for both oats and chaff is slightly easier, due no dojK to the fact that store space in the South is required for wool and merchant* «• anxious to quit stocks. B Gar tons on thj spot remain firm around 4s 4a. Southern chaff makes to £9 10s through store. Maize Market Dull Present and near future prospects far maize are dull. To-day it is difficult * get much more than 5s a bushel on tn# Auckland wharf for good, bright samp* cereal. Arrivals are mostly all coming to hand from Bay of Plenty vendor* *» Gisborne sellers are not prepared to meet the present market. A better sample cereai is coming forward, but holders have no* yet cleared out the inferior quality mauxe sent in earlier in the season. Only J* isolated instances has 5s 3d been realise* on the Auckland wharf during the pan* week. A small parcel of Australian wheat came to hand over the week, and the first Dig shipment of the Australian cereal to xr* rive this season is due next week. iRe quality is reported to be excellent. TW fowT wheat market in the South continue* firm, which either means that the oot* modity is scarce or strongly held. v*. a limited inquiry is registered on the «I»| and the market continues firm in vicinity of 8s 6d through store. The market for bran and poDara mains steady. Pollard is selling at 10s to £9 through store, and bran ai * to £6 10s. _ . . . Stocks of onions are sufficient to the market over till the arrival of tJ» Niagara with a fresh shipment of Canadian product on November a. rn ; on the spot remain unaltered at. 17s 6d a sack and 19s 6d a case throogn store. An increased seasonal demand IOTg&~ and clover seeds set in over the weeK, the demand is only temporary. SOUTHERN EXCHANGES YESTERDAY’S SALES Press Association. Wellington.—Union Bank <rights*.
