German Girl Makes Record Broad Jump
British Athletes are Surprised in Germany HOUBEN’S BRILLIANCE An English amateur athletic team, which visited Germany last month, found the standard of competition surprisingly good. Houben, the crack German sprinter, proved too good for the English invaders, winning the 100 metres in 10 2-ssec., equal to the world’s record. Lord Burghley, however, more than upheld England’s deputation in the 120yds. hurdles. The bland young English nobleman beat the German champion, Trossbach, in 15sec., faster time than has ever been done in this part of the world. The biggest surprise to the English team, however, was the performance of a Miss Gladische, who astounded the visitors by clearing 20ft. 9iin. in the long jump. The recognised world’s record for a woman was Miss Gunn’s 18ft. 3Jin. at London a year or two ago, but the effort of the German girl made the visitors wonder if some of the previous so-called world’s records were not in need of looking into. Cricket Selector’s Accident. Mr. Albert Woolley, one of the selectors of the North Shore Cricket Club, was the victim of a motor accident while touring through the Waikato last weekend. The car struck a bad patch in the road and was ditched. Mr. Woolley was injured by contact with the steering wheel and has not yet been able to return to the city.
