Birkenhead Band. —The Birkenhead j Borough Band held its tenth annual j concert in the Foresters’ Hall last t evening under the conductorship of Mr. |G. Smith. There was a good attendi ance, and an excellent programme was : provided. Course for Nurses.—lt was <nnounced at a meeting of the Wellington Hospital Board to-day that the. Department of Health proposed t«» establish in Wellington a postgraduate course for registered trair -d nurses. Piles Misplaced. —A peculiar position i has arisen in connection with the buildj ing of the Waihou Bridge, at Te Aroha. ! Certain piles are reported to be 3ft 6in out of position. The engineer informed the council that it was a serious mistake j and to overcome the error he had : drawn a plan to reinforce the last secj tion of the structure. Clay-Bird Shooting. —At Taihape yc. - j terday H. Quartermain, the present New Zealand champion, succeeded in winning the clay-bird shooting contest with the possible of 21 birds. Mr. Quartermain won the New Zealand championship in 1927, North Island championship in 1926 and the Wellington provincial championship in 1925 and 1927. Kicked by Horse. —The owner of stables in Cashel Street, Christchurch, Mr. John George Seaton, aged 77. was found at 1.40 p.m. to-day lying on his back with a deep wound in his skull, the result of a kick from a horse. He was removed to hospital, where it was found that he was suffering from a fracture of the skull and shock. His condition was very serious. ..Boy Scouts Honoured. —Three b< \ scouts, Thomas Rennie, James Mehalski, and G. M. Dodds, were publicly presented with Awards for gallantry in saving life at Dunedin last evening. The first two boys received the silver cross, the second highest scout award, which is given only when recipients have faced considerable personal risk. All the awards were for rescues from drowning. Fall From Plank.—F. Fox. of 3 Wainui Avenue, Point Chevalier, was injured in the back and ribs through falling from a scaffolding % plank yesterday afternoon. He was working on a building in Dominion Road when the scaffolding broke and he fell 12ft. After attention by Dr. Dreadon, he was taken home by the St. John Ambulance.
