United States Armed Forces Would Be Helpless if War Came

MUNITIONS OLD AND WORTHLESS By Cable.—Press Association. — Copyright. Reed. 9.48 a.m. NEW YORK, Wednesday. MESSAGE from Chattanooga, Tennessee, says that the Assistant Secretary of War, Mr. Hanford MacNider, addressed the National Manufacturers’ Association, declaring that the United States Army and Navy were equipped with out-of-date munitions, almost worthless through age, and that the armed forces of the nation "would be virtually helpless in the event of war. He asserted that immediate action to replace munitions supplies was imperative, and should be authorised by Congress. Mr. MacNider said:—“lf a war were to start now, three months after our regulars and national guardsmen went into action, not a rifle nor a machine-gun on the ground or in a plane would be able to speak with authority.”—A. and N.Z.
