CHAOTIC REPORTS

NO AUTHENTIC NEWS PROBABLY 100 DROWNED Received 10.7 a.m. NEW YORK, Wednesday. With chaotic and utterly conflicting reports still being received nearly 24 hours after the Principessa Mafalda sank off the Brazilian coast, it is impossible yet to obtain authentic information regarding the extent of the disaster, and the number of lives lost. Wireless reports received here from numerous sources estimate the death list at figures varying from 50 to 400, but the present indications are that probably 100 of the passengers and crew were drowned. However, this figure may be materially increased or decreased when the vessels carrying survivors reach port. These vessels include the steamers Avelona, Empire Star, Formosa, Athena. Baden, Rosetti the Second and Salem.—A. and N.Z.
