HUNDREDS ARE SAVED Great Work by Merchant Ships
EXTRAORDINARILY conflicting reports are to hand of the loss of life through the sinking of the Italian liner Principessa Mafalda, which foundered on Tuesday, 130 miles south-east of Bahia, Brazil. The ship carried 1,258 passengers, and the latest message from Montevideo says that only 34 were missing last night. Other estimates range from 68 to 536. Reed. 9.5 a.m. RIO DE JANEIRO, Wed. The Italian liner Principessa Mafalda, of Genoa, en route to Rio de Janeiro, foundered and sank on Tuesday 130 miles south-east of Bahia, Brazil. Of the number saved the French steamer Formose rescued 120, the British steamer Empire Star 200 and the German vessel Athena 400. The British steamer Radioleine also assisted, but it is not known whether she rescued any of the passengers. Many of those on board the lost vessel were emigrants on the way to the Argentine. The Brazilian Minister of the Navy, Admiral Pinto de Luz, has ordered a cruiser to proceed to the scene of the wreck.—A. and N.Z.
