LATE MR. JOHN FAWCUS

A highly-respected resident of Auckland, Mr. John Fawcus, died at his home. Paget Street, on Tuesday at the age of 86. Born in England Mr. Fawcus went to Australia before coming to New Zealand. Being an engineer by trade he identified himself with the Amalgamated Engineers* Union when he came to Auckland and was an energetic advocate in the cause of the workers. He was one of the pioneers of the Labour movement in the Dominion and for a number of years was a member of the Board of Conciliation. On one occasion he stood unsuccessfully for Parliament. Before the introduction of universal training. NLr. Fawcus was a vice-president of the National Defence League. For some years he had been living in retirement.
