OFFENCES AGAINST BOYS
SCOUTMASTER GUILTY SENTENCE DEFERRED “I will consider the recommendation for mercy—l always do—but it must not be forgotten that this man was in the position of a leader of Boy Scouts, and was expected to teach them right morals and conduct.” Thus Mr. Justice Reed in the Supreme Court yesterday afternoon, after the jury had returned a verdict of guilty, with a recommendation to mercy, against Thomas John Davies, who was charged on five counts of indecent assaults on boys. For the Crown, Mr. V. N. Hubble said the offences occurred when the lads took trips with the accused. The defence by Mr. Mackay was that the statements . of the boys were actuated by ill-will, and that none were true. In remanding the prisoner till Monday for sentence, his Honour directed that he be physically examined to ascertain whether his condition was not curable.
