Welcome to Visiting Bakers
ALL WELL-“BREAD” MEN TRAVELLERS FROM AFAR Just under 100 delegates from Australia and sufficient numbers from New Zealand to crowd the Auckland City Council Chamber, took part in a civic reception to visiting delegates to ; the Federation of Australian and New Zealand Master Bakers’ Association's “Ist annual conference, at noon to- i day. The conference proper began this ; afternoon. For the civic function the chamber ■ was decorated with flowers. The de- ! legates faced a magnificent array of j spring blooms. The Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon. said that j nothing was of more value than these visits. He hoped this conference would further help to bind the Empire i in its future difficulties. The united 1 effort of the Anzacs was one of the ! finest examples of the combination between the two countries. He congratulated the trade on the standard it had reached and the good name it ; maintained. He wished them a j pleasant sojourn, and hoped the Australians would take back pleasant recollections on behalf of Maoriland and its people. Sir Thomas Mackenzie welcomed the 1 delegates on behalf of the Government. Unfortunately the Hon. A. r>. McLeod had been unable to be present. Some of the delegates had come 3.000 miles on the vital business of the use of flour and its products. On behalf of the New Zealand bakers the Dominion president. Mr. G. K. Matliieson, welcomed the visitors.
The reply was made by Mr. H. U. Burton, of Sydney, president of the conference. “We have come 4.000 miles to give you better bread.” remarked the speaker amid laughter. “You can see we are well-“bread” men. He hoped the Government would realise that to do their best and pay their way they must not be hemmed in. Night baking, he hoped, would never be called for again.
