Auckland Appointee to Supreme Court?

MINISTER’S STATEMENT MR. J. B. JOHNSTON MENTIONED Press Association. WELLINGTON, Tuesday. In reply to a question to-day, with regard to'the filling of the vacancy on i the Supreme Court Bench caused by i the retirement of Mr. Justice Stringer, ! the Minister of Justice, the Hon. J. F. Rolleston, said that the matter was j now under consideration, and that an I announcement would be made when a decision had been arrived at by Cabinet.

It is understood that Mr. J. B. Johnston has been asked if he is prepared to accept the appointment. Mr. Johnston, who is president of the Auckland Law Society, refused a similar proposal some time ago, but is now said to be inclined to accept.

It is expected in legal circles in Auckland and in Wellington that he will be appointed.

Mr. J. B. Johnston has for over 20 years been a prominent member of the Auckland Bar. A principal of the firm of Stewart, Johnston, Hough and Campbell, he is, also, a member of the Auckland Harbour Board and has just been reappointed chairman of the Auckland Yacht and Motor Boat Association.
