Londoners Cheer New Zealand Girl
MISS WILFORD’S SUCCESS REMARKABLE THEATRE SCENE By Cable. —Press Association.— Copyright. Reed. 10.5 a.m. LONDON, Tuesday. Miss Isobel Wilford, the New Zealander, who was in Australia for four years under J. C. Williamson auspices, was the centre of a remarkable scene at the Lyric Theatre. She unexpectedly replaced Miss Tallulah Bankhead, the famous American, in “The Garden of Eden,” owing
to illness, between the second and third acts.
The audience was most enthusiastic. It did not allow the orchestra to play, but cheered for five minutes, the whole length of the interval. Seldom has such instantaneous success been won in a West End theatre. —A. and N.Z.
Miss Wilford is the daughter of Mr. T. M. Wilford, M.P. for Hutt. She went to Hollywood some years ago and played for a time in motion pictures, but without any great success. After returning to New Zealand Miss Wilford was engaged by J. C. Williamson, Ltd., and toured several times. Her iast appearance in New Zealand was in a thriller play, 'The Cat and the Canary.
