SEA-WALL BULGE

ENGINEER’S LETTER APPROVED by harbour board When the Harbour Board’s engineer, Mr. D. Holderness, noticed the predicament that the Devonport Borough Council was in with its retaining wall near Devonport Ferry Wharf, he wrote drawing attention to the fault. Owing to the open texture of the scoria retaining wall, a considerable portion of the sand being pumped into the area was passing out through the stone and was being lost. Unless the bank were effectively blinded, he said, it would probably be impossible to fill completely the area. In any case, the cost of filling would be materially increased.

The action of the engineer in drawing the attention of the Devonport Borough Council to the position was approved.
