Bandits Looting on Yangtse While Amy Busy Elsewhere

By Cable. —Press Association.- — Copyright. Reed. 9.5 a.m. SHANGHAI, Tuesday. Taking advantage of the preoccupation of the military authorities in combating the menace raised by the advance of the Nanking army on Hankow, bandits are swarming in the Yangtse gorges, attacking the principal trading centres of Ichang, Chungking and Wanhsien. The authorities are powerless to suppress the outrages. Cities and vessels in the vicinity have been wantonly looted. The military authorities were appealed to without result. They were commandeering steamers, irrespective of nationality, for the transportation of reinforcements to assist in repelling the advance of the Nanking army.—A. and N.Z.
