GIRL GUIDES’ CORNER
On November 19, the Grand Rally of Auckland Guides will take place in the Domain, and each company is now busy preparing for the great day. Given fine weather a brilliant spectacle should be witnessed.
On November 25, Guiders will enter camp at Palmerston North, where training in Camp Craft will be the principal feature of the work.
Twenty-two Rangers went into camp at Otimai last Saturday with Miss Burgin, captain of the Cavell Company, in charge. This beautiful spot is only fourteen miles from Auckland, and is an ideal camping site. Unfortunately the wet mornings considerably hampered operations, but when the rain cleared, several tracking expeditions were held and the first outside Camp Fire at Otimai was lit. A Mock Court ceremony also took place. On Monday parties of Auckland Guides made the journey to Otimai, and were the guests of the Rangers, and the Ranger Captain for Gisborne was also a visitor to the camp.
The girls returned to Auckland on Tuesday morning after one of the happiest and best organised camps in Ranger history.
Six Guides of the Kakamai Company with their Lieutenant, who is known to the Wigwam as Silver Dove, left for Howick last Saturday afternoon to spend the Labour Day week-end in a bach on the Shelly Beach Estate. Eyes of the Morning and Shining Paddle were among their number, and the little party spent a happy time in spit© of the weather conditions.
The baggage had to be “hiked” two miles to the camping site, but merry marching songs helped to lighten the load. During their stay, when the rain kept them indoors, the girls practised new camp songs and added several more to their list.
Guide-Braves will be delighted to find that one of their members, Harvest Moon, has won both the drawing and poetry competitions, the jrei suits of which are announced on this page. Harvest Moon is Tawny Owl of the Opawa Brownie Pack and, from her far-flung tepee, has recently heard the call of the Wigwam.
The All Saints’ Company will hold a birthday party in their hall at Ponsonby on November 9. The Guides 1
are asked to present themselves at 6 p.m., when tea will be provided, and visitors will arrive at seven o’clock. The catering for both tea and supper will be in the hands of the girls themselves. * * * A little First Aid hint: A new pen-nib with a fine point is a useful thing to keep in a first-aid box as it is handy for removing splinters and thorns. Hold the nib so that the two points can be forced apart with the thumb. Then the splinter can be withdrawn by gently releasing the pressure and allowing the two points of the nib to close on it. —REDFEATHER.
