Limerick Wins Like a True Champion
LAUGHING PRINCE RUNS HIM TO LENGTH A LARGE crowd at Trentham yesterday saw Limerick outclass as fine a field of handicap and weight-for-age horses as has been got together for some time, and the Limond gelding received a great ovation for his very smooth performance. Laughing Prince icas second best, and in doing so well rehabilitated himself as one of our best three-year-olds.
DESPITE the wintry conditions under which racing was conducted at Trentham yesterday—light rain showers and a driving and bleak southerly wind —the sport was splendid throughout, some magnificent finishes being witnessed. The big attraction of course was the presence of Limerick in the Champion Plate, and his success in this event was achieved very easily. The Pearce Handicap resulted in a spirited duel between the three placed horses, bn this was only one where the spectators were roused to enthusiasm. The course was a bit soft, although at no stage did it get bad. The totalisator handled £59,979 for the day. The total for the meeting was £105,271, compared with £120,381, representing a decrease of £15,110. Considering the unpleasant weather both days, this could not be regarded as anyhing but satisfactory. Notes and details of the racing follow. VEXATIOUS WINS HURDLES The opening event, the Second Hurdles, attracted' a field of seven. Brigadier Bill £1,223, Anchor £1,124 and Koauau £853 monopolising the betting. Anchor led out of the straight from Brigadier Bill, Peshwa, Joyeuse, Vexatious, Koauau and Panorama. Along the back Anchor was still in the van, attended by Brigadier Bill and Vexatious, with Peshwa, Koauau and Joyeuse next. Thus they came into the straight, and at the last fence Anchor, Vexatious and Brigadier Bill were level, Vexatious then drawing out to win by two lengths from Brigadier Bill, who stayed on to beat Anchor by a head for second dividend. Koauau was half a length away fourth and Peshwa and Joyeuse at intervals. BLIMP BEATS THE FAVOURITE Nineteen saddled up for the Spring Trial Plate, and in an interesting money market most support was forthcoming from Ring Boy £940, Don Jose £751, Blimp £712 and the His-toric-Tone brcicket £683. At the start Vindication was hopelessly left, Ring Boy going out fast from Tone, Priceless, Blimp and Irish Lad. Blimp ran up second at the half mile, the order into the straight being Ring Boy, Irish Lad, Blimp, Tone and Maui, with a big bunch following. The favourite still had charge at the distance, where Blimp challenged, and with a well timed run Wiggins got his mount home a winner by three parts of a length from Ring Boy. Tone was half a length away third, and Maui right up fourth. There was daylight back to Zippor, with Kindle, Irish Lad and Mandarine next. WANDERLUST AT LAST Of the fourteen runners in the Tararua Handicap Ganymede £1,142, Kilmiss £1,036 and Boy £1,002, all went over four figures, with Wanderlust £829 at the head of the remainder. Rotowhero, Oratrix and Talisker were prominent at the start, and soon they were joined by Pangolin and Ladykiller, but at the end of a couple of furlongs Ladykiller was making play from Wanderlust, Oratrix, Talisker, Pangolin and Boy. Crossing the top Wanderlust went to the front, and showed the way into the straight to Twink, Thurnbell, Ganymede, Talisker, Oratrix and Boy. Wanderlust retained his advantage to score by a length from Oratrix, with Wild Pigeon a long way back at the turn, finishing wide out a neck behind. Twink was fourth, and the next across the mark were Boy, Thurnbell, Ganymede, Rotowhero, Talisker and Pangolin. A ROUGH RACE Silver Rule £l,BlB was a hot fancy some money also for Raasay £ 1,002, Flicker £957, Chit £729 and the Stag-hunter-Shot Silk bracket £7lB. Chit began best from Silver Rule and Flicker, and on to the course proper they were closely followed by Australis, Staghunter, Lucky Bag and Moutoa Treasury. Here there was some interference, Silver Rule giving Flicker a bump, and then the latter retaliated and bored over on to the favourite for the remainder of the journey. Chit was collared by Silver Rule, and Flicker at the false rail, and the former pair had a hard fight. At the distance Staghunter came on the scene, and getting to the leaders a hundred yards from home passed them to win by a length, with Flicker a neck in front of Silver Rule. Raasay was fourth, and Concentrate, Moutoa Treasury, Chit, Australis and Stanchion next to cross the line. A GREAT FINISH One of the best finishes of the meeting, and incidentally a great betting race, was provided in the Pearce Handicap. Bennanee £1,147, Cerf £924, Mandane £9ll, Mask £BOI, Yoma £73l and Royal Game £719 carried most money. At the start Joy Bird dwelt slightly. Monoghan led out of the tapes from Royal Game, Mandane, Mask, Bennanee, Cerf and Vivo, and running past the five-furlong post Monoghan had been joined by Vivo, and this pair were clear of Bennanee, Rouex, Royal Game, Mask and Joy Bird. The firstmentioned pair were still in charge into the straight, with Rouex next, and then Bennanee, Cerf and Joy Bird. At the distance Vivo retired, and Royal Game had drawn up to Monoghan, while Yoma commenced his run. In an exciting finish Royal Game got a neck decision over Monaghan and Yoma, who dead-heated. Rouex and Mandane were together next, and then followed Vertigern, Mask, Bennanee, Cerf and Joy Bird. LIMERICK'S BRILLIANCY A rattling good field of eight came out for the Champion Plate, and when the totalisator closed a preference was expressed for Limerick, who was backed down to a short price, but no shorter than could have been expected. He carried £3,196, against Te Monanui £l,OOl, Laughing Prince £B9O, Star Stranger £775 and Rapier £740. jvt the start Star Stranger on the outside got a fly, and was first on the bend, followed in order by Damaris, Laughing Prince, Limerick (on the rails), Te Monanui, Grand Knight, Beacon Light and Rapier. At the seven furlongs Star Stranger was still carrying out an unusual role of pacemaker, with Te Monanui, Damaris, Laughing Prince and Limerick following, there not being more than five lengths between the eight of them. Laughing Prince went back a bit in the next couple of furlongs, but otherwise the order was the same. Beacon Light
moved up across the top, and was ac- : tually moved into the straight, with Te Monanui close up. Damaris being already beaten. Star Stranger, on the rails, was next, and Limerick was just on the outside of him. Rapier and Laughing Prince heading the remainder. At the false rail Limerick was up with the leaders, and then he drew out, and Laughing Prince was also noticed making a run. Laughing Prince put in a desperate finish in an endeavour to get to the favourite, but Limerick was bowling along in Gloaming style and beat the three-year-old without being pushed along, the margin being a good length. Te Monanui was a length and a-half away third, with Grand Knight another length and ahalf away fourth. Rapier was next, and then tvere Beacon Light, »tar Stranger and Damaris. GOOD SPRINT FINISH Booster £2,133. and Shirley £1.796, disputed both favouritism, and afterwards the decision, in the open sprint, the Nainai Handicap. Booster and Shirley were running together in front all the way, being attended on to the course proper by Silver Coot, \vitn the other pair well back. A hundred yards from the post Shirley had his neck in front, but Booster s last etior.. turned the trick and he won by a neck. Kilbronsyth was two lengths away third, and Lausanne fourth. DUKE ABBEY MAKES AMENDS The final event, the Kuahine Handicap, attracted a field of 16 runners, Duke Abbey £2,102, Reckless £1,710, Paper Boy £1,622, and Fee Simple £956 carrying most money. At tne start Bank Draft was badly left, and The Raider went out to make a meny pace, leading on to the course six lengths ahead of Handy, Duke Abbey. Sarehee, Fee Simple, Reckless and Arch Arrow. The Raider died cut when the favourite caught him, and Duke Abbey came on to win comfortably by two lengths from Fee fcimple. with Reckless a neck away third. Inf Raider, Paper Boy, Mandy, lgilance and Arch Arrow were next . Concluding results: PEARCE HANDICAP Of £500; 1 mile. 6—ROYAL GAME (IV. H. Ballinger), blk c, 4yrs, by Royal Stag—Arihia, 7.11, T.
