British Wireless — Press Assn.-Copyright Received 11.30 a.m. RUGBY, Monday. THE Marquess of Cambridge, brother of Queen Mary, died in a nursing home at Shrewsbury this evening. For some time past he had been in ill health. To-day it was found that his condition had become serious, and an operation was hurriedly performed, but failed to save his life.
THK Marquess, who was bom at Kensington Palace 59 years ago, was the eldest son of the late Duke of Teck and Princess Mary Adelaide, daughter of the first Duke of Cambridge. He made his career in the British Army, serving first with the 17th Lancers and later with the Ist Life Guards. He took an active part in the South African War and was present at the relief of Kimberley.
During the Great War he acted as Assistant-Military Secretary at the War Office, and subsequently as As-sistant-Military Secretary at the General Headquarters in France, with the rank of Brigadier-General. He suceeded to the title of Duke of Teck In 1900, on the death of his father, but relinquished the title in 1917, when he was created Marquess of Cambridge.-—A. and N.Z.
