BIRKENHEAD WELCOMES ITS NEW MAYORESS
BOUQUETS FOR MRS. SKEATES Heavy showers yesterday did not deter Birkenhead’s councillors, many citizens, girl guides, and brownies, from turning out to welcome their new Mayoress, Mrs. E. G. Skeates, who arrived with her husband by the Aorangi from Australia. The berthing at Birkenhead Wharf of the ferry on wnich Mr. and Mrs. Skeates were passengers was the signal for a spontaneous tooting of motor horns and hearty hand clapping. On the wharf they were met by Mr. A. Hadfield, Deputy-Mayor of Birkenhead, who welcomed them on behalf of the council and residents. Bouquets were presented to Mrs. Skeates by Miss Mary Cooke and Miss Rene Woods on behalf of the girl guides and brownies. Later in #he day Mr. Hadfield took Mr. and Mrs. Skeates on a motor tour i round Birkenhead.
