BIRCHING NECESSARY

Sir,— I am not a Bible in Schools supporter but I desire to uphold the remark of Mr. L. M. Isitt regarding the increase of dishonesty among our boys. One reason is that no person likes now to bring forward a case when it means danger of the lad being made a State ward, and removed from his parents’ guardianship, or even knowledge. In the old days such a boy was given a sound thrashing, and that nine times out of ten stopped him. Now, owing to the sentimentalism of which Mr. Isitt speaks, this is not done, the parents’ complete rights instead being at least threatened. The increase in dishonesty is nothing to what it will be, most of us believing in the short sharp punishment, instead of so-called correction in a Borstal. We will get back to such days as those when forgery was rampant because no one would report when too severe a penalty was exacted. The increase in dishonesty many of us know to be an absolute fact, IGNOTUS.
