News and Notes
SPORTS CLUB The club hill climb will be held on Saturday. October 29, at the Mangere speedway. There are already a large number of entries in all classes, which comprise heavyweight, 600 c.c.; middleweight, 350 c.c.; lightweight and up to 250 c.c. ultra lightweight. At the speedway on Saturday afternon 23 competitors with their machines stripped for action were practising for the forthcoming hill climb and the spectators were treated to thrills as well as a few' spills. Some good times for the hill were recorded. The Person brothers and the three McLarens were well to the fore and all performed well. Les. McLaren, who has recently acquired a new mount, showed good speed at the start, but lost time on the last stiff pinch, apparently through rearw'heel slip. I£. McLaren made a perfect climb and made the climb in the record time of 28s. S. Person was only one second slower. Judging has commenced for the McLeod Trophy, although only five machines were eligible at the last run, all others being too late to qualify. The ladies committee are busy organising a dance which will take place during November. MOTOR-CYCLE SHOW AND GYMKHANA A motor-cycle show and gymkhana will be held on Saturday, November 5, at the Epsom Show Grounds. The motor-cycle traders are giving their support and all the popular makes of machines will be displayed in a large space set aside near the grandstand. An attractive programme of sports will be provided, starting with a “grand parade” of decorated motor-cycles and riders in fancy dress costumes. During the afterrxon the motor-cycle football teams w’ill compete for the Artillery Cup, at present held by R. Bull’s team. In the evening a “camp fire tea” will bo provided to be followed by a bonfire and musical entertainment. All motor-cyclists are invited to take part as the club wishes to make this, the first big “motor-cycle rally” and gymkhana, an absolute success. CUT OUT THE OPEN CUT-OUT! There is a good deal of prejudice in the minds of the general public against motor-cycles, caused in a large measure by the noise made by a few thoughtless riders. Help to popularise the sport, by cutting out those open exhaust pipes. RACING AT CHRISTCHURCH Results are available of the opening day’s races of the Pioneer Sports Club (motor-cycle), Christchurch.
