RACING AT TRENTHAM
Favourite Star Stranger Beaten by Outsider Yoma
CHILDSPLA Y’S BRILLIANCY
(Special to THE SUX) WELLINGTON, Saturday. THE Wellington Racing Club’s Spring Meeting opened to-day in windy but fine weather. There was a large attendance and the track was in excellent order. The sum of £45,292 was put through the machine as against £48,049 on the corresponding day last year, a decrease of £2,757.
The First Hurdles provided a sensation soon after the start. Anchor £826, Tarleton £7lB, Brigadier Bill £649 and .Koauau £574 were all solidly backed. At the start Tarleton on the outside went across the field and in the scrambling that followed he knocked Vexatious over and interfered seriously with Brigadier Bill. Panorama had a slight lead over Anchor, Peshwa, Matu, Tarleton, Brigadier Bill and Koauau out of the straight, and along the back Panorama, Psliwa, Koauau and Brigadier Bill were in the van, Anchor having been knocked back. Peshwa and Koauau were together crossing the top and showed the way into the straight to Anchor, Brigadier Bill and Tarleton. Koauau was first over the last fenc 2 and came on to win nicely by three lengths from Brigadier Bill, Peshwa eight lengths away third, and Anchor close up. Next came Matu, Tarleton and Panorama at good intervals.
R. McSeveny, rider of Tarleton, was suspended for the remainder of the meeting for careless riding. OUTSIDER DEFEATS THE FAVOURITE
The Taiti Handicap, for two-year-olds, drew a field of 19, several of whom had chances extinguished at the barrier rise. Silver Rule £977, was favourite, with Second Wind £584, Australis £438 and Bridget-Flicker bracket £366 also counting friends. At the start Agreeable stood on the mark and Second Wind, Full Feather and Tea Doll were among those who did not leave the mark well. Bridget, Flicker and Silver Rule began brilliantly, and these three were in the van as they came on to the course proper, followed by Australis, Te Atiawa and Staghunter. Royal Duke joined the issue, while Bridget, Staghunter and Australis»were just behind them. In a fine finish between the first three, Royal Duke wore the favourite down to beat her by a neck, with Flicker half a length away third. There was a gap back to Staghunter, after whom came Bridget, Australis, Killigrew, Lucky Bag and Miss Gowrie. The winner paid a double-figure dividend. DOREE’S GOOD FINISH reduced the Wainui Handicap field to 13, and backers had no hesitation in making Beacon Light a hot favourite, the Hawke’s Bay representative carrying £l,llß, against Damaris £764, with Doree £595, Tiega £421 at great prices. At the start Orazone dwelt, and Doree was leading Cerf, Tiega and Mandane, all going out fast. When they had settled down, Doree was leading Damaris, Cerf, Tiega, Mandane, Orazone. Beacon Light and Monoghan, this being the order at the end of three furlongs. Crossing the top Damaris had charge and showed the way into the straight from Tiega, Orazone, Monaghan. Beacon Light, Mandane and Doree. •At the distance Tiega looked a winner, Daiharis having quickly faded out, but he stopped and then Doree shot through, and going on won by a length from Vertigern, who came strongly over the last bit. Cerf was another length away and Damaris was at the head of the remainder. Then in a bunch were Tiega, Orazone. Mandane and Ganymede.
FAVOURITES WELL BEATEN Twenty-one contested the Rimutaka Handicap, the best backed being Vigilance £737, Cornstalk £547, Ladykiller £527, Oratrix £506 and Rowley £475. At the start Pangolin, Masher and Rowley lost some ground, while Cornstalk. Rotowhero and Kiimiss began best, but at the end of a furlong Tone ran to the front from Mandarine, Kilmoyler, Cornstalk, Kilmiss, Princess and Wanderlust. At the half-mile Kilmoyler took command showing the way into the straight to Mandarine, King Midas, Vigilance, Cornstalk and Pangolin. Once straightened up, Kilmoyler retained his lead and although Wanderlust and Ring Boy, who were both hemmed in, got clear late and challenged, the leader went on to win by half a length from Wanderlust, with Ring Boy the same distance away. Rowley finished strongly in fourth place, and then came Ladykiller, Twink, Mandarine, Tone and Vigilance. YOMA SPRINGS A SURPRISE Rapier and Black Mint were withdrawn from the Wellington Handicap, leaving a dozen runners. Star Stranger £1,625, was a big favourite, Nippy £777, Mask £717, Bennanee £704, David Garrick £523 and Royal
Game £456 being the best supported of the remainder. At the start Nippy screwed badly and lost about three lengths. Rouex led out of the straight, closely attended by Mask, David Garrick, Star Stranger, Bennanne and Boy, with Novar last. Entering the back stretch David Garrick was in front of Rouex, Boy, Mask, Bennanee, Star Stranger, Nippy and Royal Game, but a little further on Rouex was again in charge, his nearest attendant at the five furlongs being David Garrick, Bennanee, Boy, Star Stranger, Mask, Royal Game and Nippy. Crossing the top and into the straight Rouex showed the way to Bennanee, David Garrick, Boy, Mask, Nippy, Star Stranger and Novar. The leader was finished with at the false rail, where Bennanee was in charge, but Yoma then challenged and the favourite made his effort on the rails. A fine finish saw Yoma win by half a length from Star Stranger, the latter just getting up to beat Bennanee by a nose. Rouex was fourth, just in front of Nippy. Then came Tresham, David Garrick. Mask, Novar, Ardfinnan, Royal Game and Boy last.
The winner, like the* two preceding victors, paid a double-figure dividend. A BRILLIANT YOUNGSTER There was big money for Childsplav in the Wellesley Stakes, the filly carrying £1,558, while Prince Humphrey £1,134 and Endorse £1,029 also had a lot of friends. Endorse on the inside began very quickly, and led out from High Disdain, Childsplay and Prince Humphrey. these being the leading bunch on to the course prope \ being followed by Banket and Knightlike. As soon as they straightened up Endorse began to stop and then Childsplay ran past her, while Prince Hum-
phrey and High Disdain were still a little way off. At the furlong post the favourite was live lengths ahead of Prince Humphrey and Endorse, and although the Aucklander challenged hotly, Childsplay won by a length. Tea
Miss got up third four lengths away, with Endorse fourth, and then came High Disdain, Raasay, Knightlike, Banket, Moutoa, Treasury, Chit and Shot Silk, who was off the course at the turn last. There is no doubt about Childsplay’s brilliancy, while Prince Humphrey, under punishment over the last two furlongs, was finishing very fast, but the favourite was doing it nicely. A STIRRING FINISH Lysander £1,020, Shirley £875, Gascony £Bl9 and Booster £641 carried most money in the Shorts Handicap. A beautiful start saw Gascony first to’ show out, closely followed by Booster, Bysander, Shirley and Joy King, this quintette being first to the course proper. At the false rail Lysander and Joy King were in front, and when the former weakened at the distance Joy King was left clear, but then Benzora, Booster, Kilbronsyth and- T® Monanui put in their claims, a fine finish seeing Benzora get up to win by a neck from Te Monanui, who showed rare sprinting ability. Joy King was half a length away third and showed returning form. Booster was a good fourth, and Kilbronsyth fifth, and then came Lysander, Silver Coo*. Gascony, Royal Ceres, Lausanne and Grand Knight last. Both Joy King and Lysander wanted a race. Tl TREE WINS NICELY Twenty-three started in the concluding event, the October Handicap, Duke Abbey £1,635, being a firm favourite, with Ti Tree. £961 and Sar-chee-Hymgreat bracket £558 also well supported. The race was run in failing light and misty rain, and visibility
was bad. Duke Abbey and Arch Arrow were at the head of the bunch on to the course proper, and when they straightened up, Ti Tree drew clear and at the false rail was three lengths ahead. Keddar challenged, but Ti Tree won by two lengths, Paper Boy being three lengths away third, just in front of Oscillation, with Maui, Fee Simple and Sarchee next to cross the line.
