RESULTS OF SATURDAY’S. MATCHES

FAVOURED by excellent weather, a large number of city and suburban bowling clubs held their official openings on Saturday. The greens were in excellent order, and the attendances at all the functions were large.

Auckland Club The scene at the opening of the Auckland Bowling Club in Grafton Road on Saturday afternoon was one of enthusiasm. There was an exceptionally large attendance of club members and visitors, including many ladies. The greens were in excellent order and looking - very tempting. The pavilion and grounds were bedecked with bunting, while the tea. room was a picture of coloured flowers. A miniature green, with a statuette of a bowler, on a table was a ■ distinctive feature. in declaring the season open. Air. G. J. Mackay, president, expressed pleasure at the attendance, especially of the ladies. The forthcoming season, he said, promised to be a record one, and with the Summer Time Bill in operation bowlers would be enabled to carry on the competitions to a greater extent than before. A letter of congratulation had been forwarded to Air. T. K.. Sidey, ALP., upon his efforts, which had, at last, resulted in_ success. Air. Alackay congratulated the green superintendent and caretaker on the manner in which th§ greens had beer, prepared. He mentioned that the premier clubs of Canada and Australia had extended an ihvitation to a New Zealand bowler’s team to pay a visit next year, and he hoped to see some of their members making the trip. Airs. Alackay then threw the jack and the 1927-28 season was declared open. Eleven greens were playing during the afternoon. An orchestra dispensed music, and afternoon tea was served. Carlton “The prosperity of the Carlton Bowling Club has always been due to the loyalty of its members, and to those many friends who have worked so hard in its interests. The committee extends its sincere thanks,” said the president, Mr. W. Ball, when declaring the 1927-28 summer season open on Saturday afternoon. Air. Ball welcomed representatives from the Dominion Council, the Auckland Centre and most of the clubs in the district, to the 35th opening ceremony. To those members “who had hibernated during the winter” the president introduced a new green which had been laid down since last season. “I wish to make a special appeal to the lady friends of the club,” the president continued. “Daylight saving .will soon be with us, and wives will find their husbands coming home in time to go to bed.” He appealed to them to put up with such irregularities because the men folk would no doubt be in better tempers with so much more play. In accordance with the time honoured custom, the president’s wife, Airs. Ball, threw the first jack and play commenced. Afternoon tea was served by the ladies in the clubhouse to the visitors and playing members. Play resulted as follows:

S. \Y\ King, welcomed the visitors and referred to the fact that the Alayor of Devonport, Air. E. Aldridge, was present. He was new to bowls, said Air. King, but they soon hoped to make a bowler of 'him. Air. Aldridge congratulated the club on its improvements, which had been extensive during the year. Mount Albert Before the 1927-28 season closes it is hoped that at least 30 new members will have linked up with the Alt. Albert Bowling Club. That was the keynote to the speech of the president, Air. J. C. AVallett, at the official opening of the club on Saturday afternoon. In extending a welcome to the large assemblage of bowlers and visitors, the president expressed the hope that from the large population of Alt. Albert they would be able to bring their membership up to at least 120. The operation of the Daylight Saving Bill would allow greater opportunities for play, and lie sincerely trusted that the coming season would be a most successful one. Mr. L. E. Rhodes, Alayor of Alt. Albert, who was present as a visitor, congratulated the club on the splendid condition of the greens. Amidst the applause of the assemblage the first “kitty” was thrown by Airs. He congratulated the Auckland Bowling Centre on re-electing Mr. Pascoe as its president. West End A large gathering of members and friends assembled at the 16th opening of the West End Bowling Club on Saturday. The weather was all that could be desired and the green was tastefully decorated. Air. G. H. Plummer, president, expressed the club’s deepest appreciation of the services of the ladies, who were given three cheers at his request. Mr. J. W. Hardley, past president of the. Dominion Bowling Association, expressed his pleasure at being present. On behalf of the Dominion Association, he wished the club every success. Mr. Hardley was supported by Messrs. Whitten and Tonkin, members of the Auckland Centre. Mr. M. J. Savage, M.P.. expressed thanks for the opportunity of meeting members of the club. Whatever was due in thanks for the Daylight Saving Bill, he said, was due to Mr. T. K. Sidey, M.P. Mrs. Plummer then rolled the silver jack and made a toucher with the first bowl. Ellerslie There was a large gathering at the j opening ot“ the Ellerslie green. The i president congratulated the club on its : progress during the year. He said; special praise was due to Mr. J. A. Godfrey and Mr. Woolliams for the splendid playing green. During the year the club laid down a new croquet lawn as a result of a scheme brought down by Air. J. A. Godfrey, It will be ready for play by Christmas. Among those present was Air. W. J. Jordan, M.P., patron of the club, who spoke on the Summer Time Bill. Other visitors included Air. W. J. Alunro. Wanganui, Mr. Selby, representing the Ho wick Club, who was the oldest member on the green, and Mr. C. H. Hill, a life member. Air. Selby is 89 years of age and Air. Hill is 85. Otahuhu About 150 members and visitors attended the official opening of the Otahuhu Bowling Club. The president, All. E. V. Pearce, and Airs. Pearce received the guests. The pavilion and grounds were decorated with hunting and ferns, and flowers adorned the tea tables. The president welcomed the visitors. On behalf of the club he thanked Mr. J. Ogilvie for his gift of a new club pennant, which was inscribed with the club’s monogram. The president thanked the greens superintendent, Air. K. Lippiatt, for his supervision and the splendid condition of the greens. Airs. Pearce threw the first jack. During the afternoon, Air. J. W. Hardley and Air. Thompson, of the Auckland Centre, paid an official visit and games were suspended while the visitors addressed the gathering. Afternoon tea was served by Airs. Mangere East In ideal weather conditions, and with a perfect playing green, the Mangere East Bowling Club played the first round of the club’s percentage fours on Saturday. With the pavilion bedecked \n ith strings of gay bunting, and the municipal band enlivening the proceedings with an abundance of musical items, the Otahuhu Bowling Club successfully opened its greens on Saturday, under ideal weather conditions. The lawns presented a very gay appearance, as representatives from practically every club in the Auckland district were present, and each displayed a combina - non of colours distinguishing their headquarters. In h. few words. Mr. G. V. Pearce, president, welcomed the visitors, and expressed his wish that one and all would spend an enjoyable day’s play. He then called on Airs. Opotiki (From Our Own Correspondent) OPOTIKI, Saturday. The Opotiki Citizens’ Bowling Club green was opened this afternoon in glorious summer weather. A large number of members turned up.
