YACHT RACING BEGINS

RUN TO ARKLE’S BAY

EVENT WON BY KOKIRI The Richmond Cruising Club held a scratch yacht race on Saturday—the first of the season—when six boats competed in a ..run from the startingline off Ponsonby Wharf to Arkle’s Bay, a distance of 15 miles. A stiff westerly breeze was blowing when the boats got away, but the wind later changed to north-west and finally west to the north. Thus the boats were given a run down harbour, a lead to Takapuna and from there a beat to the destination. Six boats lined up at 2.40 p.m.. Matariki (15min), being first to cross the mark, followed closely by Leveret (16min), Kokiri (scr). Sun (ISmin), Rita (25min>, Mowai (4min), all in close formation, and in that order. Sun, Kokiri and Leveret immediately set spinnakers, but the others did not make extra sail. Off the western tidedeflector Kokiri assumed the lead and Sun replaced Leveret and Matariki. Kokiri gradually went further ahead and off Devonport was well in the lead, a position she maintained until the finish. Leveret almost came level with Sun at Queen’s Wharf, and these two made

a close race. Matariki was gradually i dropping astern, and at Devonport was holding fifth place. Rita was last. After passing North Head Matariki overhauled Mowai. These two boats worked the Lake shore, but did not do as well as the others, especially Sun and Leveret, which kept well out in the channel. The finishing times

were:—Kokiri, 6h 46m 30s; Sun, 7h 27m: Leveret, 7h 3Sm 10s; Matariki Sh 0m 15s; Mowai, Sh 5m 3s: Rita did not finish. Result:—Kokiri, 1; Sun, 2: Leveret, 3. .The officials in charge of the racing
